IBEW Local 520 Minority Caucus gives back to local elementary school
On March 2, eight members of IBEW Local 520 donated sports equipment to Callison Elementary of the Round Rock independent School District.
The community involvement project was organized by the IBEW Local 520 Electrical Workers Minority Caucus. The IBEW Minority Caucus is a national sub-group of the IBEW. Founded in 1974, the Minority Caucus works to promote equality within the IBEW, foster minorities into IBEW leaders, organize minority workers, encourage minorities to be community activists and promote involvement in human, civil and women’s rights organizations.
The Local 520 Minority Caucus chapter donated a number of basketballs, playground balls, exercise balls, frisbees, jump ropes and other sports equipment to the school, which previously did not have any of the items.
The wife of a Local 520 member is a counselor at the school and many members of IBEW 520 have children in the Austin-Round Rock area, making this project one of personal importance to the membership.
Recognizing the need for the equipment at the under-privileged school, the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus came together to collect enough individual donations from members to purchase the $580 worth of equipment.
This was the first time that the Minority Caucus raised money for this specific purpose, but they saw it as fitting.
In total, the Minority Caucus volunteered for 15 hours, raising the money, purchasing the equipment and delivering the items to the school.
Community involvement is part of what the IBEW and Local 520 do, as most of our members live in the community they work in. The Local realizes that it is important to give back to the area that has given us so much work throughout the years, helping our membership provide for their families.
