The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 520 was recently recognized with an award at the 2021 IBEW Membership Development Conference for their organizing efforts.
The award is given to the IBEW Local Union that organized the most construction workers out of all IBEW Local Unions in the U.S. and Canada.
Congratulations to the Local 520 organizing team and union membership, who put forth a great effort to organize, leading to the award.
In the November edition of the Trailblazer, Business Manager/Financial-Secretary Ben Brenneman wrote about how proud he is of the membership for helping the Local earn the award.
“Each and every one of you had a hand in making this achievement possible,” wrote Brenneman.
For over a year, Local 520 members have worn shirts with the slogan “organize every electrician.” These efforts helped Local 520 remain strong during a time of unprecedented amounts of work.
“When Tesla came to Austin, we were at full employment,” Brenneman stated. “We were faced with manning a large job that was paying far less than other jobs around the nation. Our Local office, with help from the Seventh District Organizing Department, was able to change our processes to help us man the work.”
He also expressed his appreciation to the many Local 520 signatory contractors for their willingness to work together with the Local.
“We cannot grow as a Union if our contractors do not risk their assets by bidding and winning the work,” Brenneman wrote. “The contractors cannot grow if we do not attract and retain members.”
