IBEW Local 520 - New member swear-in

IBEW 520 event celebrates new members

IBEW Local 520 officially welcomed in new members who joined the Local during the COVID-19 pandemic with a mass swear-in event at the Local 520 Union Hall on June 26.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges for union leaders when trying to conduct traditional union business, such as swearing in new members at regular monthly meetings. With all pandemic restrictions now lifted, the Local is getting back to normal and was proud to hold a special event to honor our newest Brothers and Sisters.

New Local 520 families were invited to the ceremony, as well as fellow Local 520 Brothers and Sisters, to support the new members in this important step of their careers.

The culmination of the event occurred when the new members gathered in the parking lot, raised their hand and took the oath of obligation. In unison, the 80 new members in attendance made the ceremonial commitment to the future of Local 520.

Local 520 Business Manager/Financial Secretary Ben Brenneman was honored to see so many new members complete a ritual performed by all members who have come before them.

“Our Oath of Obligation is what binds us together as a community of over 750,000 workers across the United States and Canada,” he said. “It felt good to give members who joined during the pandemic the opportunity to perform this ritual.”

After being sworn in, the new members in attendance all signed a red hardhat. In addition to being the color Local 520 wears every Thursday to show solidarity, this hardhat will be a reminder of the challenging year and the unique event it produced.

Besides the oath of obligation and hardhat signing, attendees were treated to fajitas, brisket and other barbecued food.

Local 520 members worked hard throughout the pandemic. Our organizers continued recruiting new members and our signatory contractors kept bidding additional work. This event was the culmination of a team effort worth celebrating.

Local 520 thanks all the new members, their families, apprentices and journeyman members for attending and making this event such a success.
